Economic Operation of China’s Printing and Dyeing Industry in Q1

I. Production
The data released by the National Bureau of Statistics revealed that the output of printed and dyed fabrics above the designated size in the printing and dyeing industry totaled 12.49 billion meters in the first quarter of 2023, down by 0.27% year-on-year. From the perspective of monthly output, in March, the output of printed and dyed fabrics above the designated size in the printing and dyeing industry reached 5.83 billion meters, seeing year-on-year growth of 11.37%. In the first quarter, the production of the printing and dyeing industry gradually improved, of which the production output in March hit a new high. The rebounded consumption has contributed to the recovery.

II. Operation quality and efficiency
According to the data from the National Bureau of Statistics, from January to March, the business income of the printing and dyeing enterprises above the designated size reached CNY 65.33 billion, down by 4.18% year-on-year, 5.35 percentage points narrower than the January-February period. Their total profits reached CNY 1.19 billion, down by 36.67% year-on-year, 52.62 percentage points narrower than the first two months this year. 45.44% of printing and dyeing enterprises operated in deficit with CNY 1.46 billion of loss value, which surged by 44.13% year-on-year.

III. Exports
According to the statistics released by China General Customs, the export volume of eight major categories of printed and dyed products, i.e., dyed cotton fabric, printed cotton fabric, dyed cotton-blended fabric, printed cotton-blended fabric, synthetic filament fabric, polyester staple fabric, printed and dyed T/C fabric, man-made staple fabric, totaled 8 billion meters last year, up by 11.60% year-on-year. While the export value was US$ 7.85 billion, seeing a year-on-year rise of 2.25%. And the average export unit price was US$ 0.98/meter, declining by 8.38% year-on-year. Among the exports of eight major categories of printed and dyed products in China, the exports of printed and dyed T/C fabric and man-made staple fabric surged by 272.76% and 19.68% respectively.

Among the main export destinations, the export volume of China’s eight major categories of printed and dyed products to the RCEP trading partner countries and ASEAN countries increased by 6.62% and 7.23%, respectively. In the first quarter, in the face of the shrinking market demand, the exports in China’s printing and dyeing industry stayed in good shape. On the basis of a higher base last year, the main product exports maintain growth; while the average unit price of exports fell significantly, reflecting the intensified competition.
