Development and Application of a Metal Impurity and Spark Detection, Removal, and Extinguishing System for Spinning Mills

Abstract: To eliminate the risks of dust explosions and fires in the blowroom and carding processes of spinning mills, a metal impurity and spark detection, removal, and extinguishing system was developed based on a layered prevention and control strategy and a coordinated control mechanism. The system adopts a five-layer architecture consisting of "perception-network-control-execution-assurance." The perception layer integrates spark detection, metal impurity detection, and environmental monitoring modules. The network layer employs edge-computing gateways supporting multiple communication technologies, including 4G and WIF, to ensure reliable data transmission. The control layer consists of a main controller, coordinated control units, and a human-machine interface, and is responsible for logical decision-making and coordinated control. The execution layer includes fire-extinguishing devices, impurity removal mechanisms, and auxiliary interlocking equipment for rapid response. The assurance layer relies on auxiliary sensors and comprehensive diagnostic programs to ensure stable system operation. The system can accurately detect minute sparks and metallic impurities with diameters of >0.5 mm in conveying ducts used in the blowroom and carding processes, achievinga spark detection rate of >99.5% and a false alarm rate of 1 per month. The total response time from detection to activation of the extinguishing system is 30 ms, enabling ignition sources to be extinguished within the critical ignition time of cotton dust (100-200 ms). The system realizes full-process automation covering detection, alarm, fire extinguishing, equipment interlocking, and firecontainment, effectively preventing fire from spreading to other processes or areas and providing reliable protection for production and personnel safety in spinning mills.
