Prosperity Index of China’s Cotton Textile Industry Decreased Slightly in May

China Cotton Textile Prosperity Index edged down. In May 2026, the China cotton textile prosperity index stood at 49.9%, below the critical threshold and down 0.1 percentage points from April. In May, the cotton textile market entered its traditional off-season, and overall business conditions weakened slightly, with the index falling below the 50-point threshold separating expansion from contraction. Among the seven sub-indices that make up the China Cotton Textile Prosperity Index, the raw material inventory index, finished product inventory index, and enterprise confidence index were below the critical threshold, while the remaining indices were above it. Compared with April, the production index, product sales index, and enterprise confidence index increased, while the other indices declined.

In May, the raw material purchasing index came in at 50.2%, down 2.5 percentage points over April; the raw material inventory index came in at 48.7%, down 2.1 percentage points month-on-month; the production index was 50.3%, up 0.9 from April; the product sales index came in at 50.2%, up 2.5 percentage points from April; the product inventory index was 48.0%, down 3.2 from April and the business index came in at 50.0%, down 0.2 percentage points from the previous month.

The prosperity index of China’s cotton textile industry is based on the weighed calculation of numerous main indicators of about 500 cotton textile enterprises. A reading above 50 indicates expansion, while a reading below reflects contraction.
