Structural Analysis for a Battery Separator

Abstract: The chemical structure, morphological structure and dopants of a battery separator were analyzed by using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Infrared Spectrometer (IR), Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS), Atomic Emission Spectrometry (AES) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectrum (XPS). The analysis results show that the battery separator is a kind of nonwoven fabric made from randomly piled-up staple fibers with diameter less than 20 μm; its thickness is about 70-80 μm; many tiny holes in irregular shapes exist between fibers and along the thickness direction; and fiber surface is covered with more than 10% CaCl2 and CaS.
