This paper describes the development of spunmelt nonwovens containing VistamaxxTM propylene-based elastomer as a minor component in isotactic polypropylene. The specific construction is an SMMS nonwoven designed for applications such as leg barrier in diapers in which each spunbond layer is a blend of isotactic polypropylene at approximately 84 weight percent and VistamaxxTM 6202 propylene-based elastomer at approximately 16 weight percent. Each meltblown layer of the SMMS fabric comprises high melt flow rate PP, optionally modified with VistamaxxTM2320 propylene-based elastomer at approximately 15 weight percent. Fabric properties that include tensile strength, elongation, hydrohead (HH) and Handle-O-Meter were evaluated. The study indicates that in comparison to unmodified fabrics, SMMS nonwovens in which both S layers are modified with VistamaxxTM propylene-based elastomer show enhanced softness as demonstrated by reduction in Handle-O-Meter values and maintain acceptable hydrohead properties. The softness attribute provides unique performance features that can be applied in leg cuffs and can be extended to medical gowns and other applications.
